CHARLOTTE

Charlotte is a quiet town with a population of less than 300. Incorporated in 1825 many of its residents are direct descendants of those who settled the town in 1809.

One intriguing landmark in Charlotte is the Charlotte Cattle Pound. The present structure was built around 1866 and is one of the few in the State of Maine. The structure is octagonal and made of cedar logs, which are now covered in moss. The Pound’s main use was to contain stray cattle, sheep, or goats, which had strayed from their owner’s property onto another person’s land. The pound is located on Round Pond Road near the four corners.
