MACHIAS

Machias derived its name from a corruption of the Native American word, "Mechises", meaning “bad little falls”. The town, located in the heart of blueberry country, is on U.S. Rte 1 at the intersection of Rte. 92 and is home to the University of Maine, Machias.

MACHIASPORT

Machiasport is home to the historical sites of Fort O'Brien and the Gates House Museum. The latter is open to the public in Summer.

Machiasport is built on a hill and offers spectacular views of Machias Bay. This is where the first naval battle of the Revolution was fought between the British schooner "Margaretta" and the victorious sloop "Unity".
