FISHING
|
Washington County is one of the most beautiful parts of the state, yet oddly enough it is the most undeveloped and unsung. It is a well-kept secret that it provides the best fishing and hunting, by species and abundance, to be found in all of Maine. The county sprawls over a wild, unspoiled area measuring 80 miles from north to south and 50 miles from east to west. It is a beautiful wilderness region of pine, fir, spruce and hardwood forests, blueberry barrens, the sea, and more clean wild lakes, ponds and streams than you can imagine.

INLAND FISHING
This barely-touched down east area is the only part of its original range in the United States where salmon salar, the Atlantic salmon, can still be found.
|
The salmon rivers include the Narraguagus, Dennys, Pleasant and Machias. From Lubec, all are within easy driving distance and are wide open to all - residents and non-residents - who hold a regular Maine fishing license. There is no leased water, no closed land and no special permits required.

Fresh-water fish to be found in abundance are:
-
brook trout
-
lake trout
-
landlocked salmon
-
small mouth bass
-
chain pickerel
-
white perch
-
yellow perch
-
hornpout
-
sunfish
The St. Croix River, northwest of Calais, also offers fabulous fishing on cast and troller lures, for trout, bass, pickerel and the ever-present yellow perch of unusual size.
At Grand Lake Stream, as soon as the ice is out in the Spring, trolling is the order of things on waters such as West Grand Lake, Big Lake, and Pocumcus Lake. Grand Lake Stream itself is one of the premier fly fishing streams for landlocked salmon country. May and June is the enthusiastic fly fisherman's fantasy-fulfilled on the stream, as well as the many lakes and ponds that cover that area.
