SNOW-SHOEING AND CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING 

It’s a crisp winter’s day. There‘s fresh snow on the ground and miles of trails await you and your group. In the midst of a quiet, unhurried environment, enjoy uninterrupted time and revel in breathtaking natural beauty.

From your base in Lubec, pack your gear, pop a lunch into your backpack and head out for the trails of your choice for a day of invigorating exercise in the clean, clear air of Washington County. 

Where to Cross-Country Ski and Snow-Shoe Near Lubec

Cobscook Bay State Park - acres and acres of recreational space. Miles of groomed trails. Trek to one of the picnic shelters and enjoy your lunch break at the water’s edge of Cobscook Bay. 

Directions: From Lubec, go west on Rt. 189 to Whiting, then take U.S. Route 1 North. Follow the signs to the Park. Approximately 14 miles. 

Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge - over 50 miles of roads and trails which are closed to vehicular traffic but open for cross country skiing.

Directions: From Lubec, go west on Rt. 189, turn onto Rt. 1 North. Turn left, just beyond the Triangle Gas Station, onto the Charlotte Road, Rt. 214. Turn right at four corners towards Calais and follow the signs to Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge. Approximately 45 miles from Lubec.

 

Roosevelt Campobello International Park 

There are miles of trails (un-groomed) on which to snow-shoe or cross-country ski.
 
Directions: Cross the Roosevelt International Bridge from Lubec to Campobello Island, stopping en route at Canadian Customs. Follow the signs to the Park. 


ICE FISHING 

License Requirements
 
No resident of the State of Maine, 16 years of age or older, or nonresident, 12 years of age or older, may fish through the ice in inland waters or transport fish taken from inland waters without first obtaining a valid Maine fishing license. 

Maine Residents may obtain fishing licenses from any resident license agent. Nonresidents may obtain fishing licenses - in person or by mail from the Inland Fish and Wildlife Department Office in Augusta, or from any of the numerous nonresident license agents throughout the State. 
 
Unless otherwise specifically provided, all fishing licenses expire on December 31 of the calendar year for which they were issued. 
 
Judging Ice Conditions:  “Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin and crispy, way too risky”
 

Where to Ice Fish Close to Lubec

The letter code in bold indicates any restrictions (see below) which are in effect for these waters. 

  • Hadley Lake, East Machias A*

  • Hobart Lake, Edmunds Township B*, S-16* 

  • Josh Lake, Whiting A*

  • Orange Lake, Whiting A*

  • Pennamaquan River, from Upper Dam to Lower Dam, Pembroke A*

Restrictions:
A* - Open to ice fishing for all fish except salmon, trout, togue and bass from the time ice forms in Fall until December 31, and then open to ice fishing for all fish from January 1 through March 31.
 
B* - Closed to fishing until January 1 and then open to ice fishing for all fish from January 1 through March 31.
 
S-16* - Daily bag limit on brook trout - (includes splake), 2 fish; minimum length limit: 8 inches


SNOWMOBILING

Where to Snowmobile
