WHALE-WATCHING

Whales can sometimes be seen off-shore at West Quoddy Head Light in Quoddy Head State Park and again from East Quoddy Light, on Campobello Island. Whales are in these waters from late June to October occupying their summer feeding grounds.

Want to take a closer look at the largest of all mammals?

There are experienced fishermen who run whale-watching boats from Head Harbour on Campobello Island, as well as out of Eastport and Calais.

Campobello is a short drive from Lubec, over the Roosevelt International Bridge (toll free - ID is required by Canadian/US Customs) and Eastport is a short foot-ferry ride from Lubec.

Minkes, finbacks and humpback whales are the ones most commonly seen and in between breathtaking sightings, visitors can appreciate nature at her best.  The scenery is spectacular.

PUFFIN-WATCHING

Machias Seal Island is approximately ten miles out of Cutler Harbor and is the breeding site of the largest nesting colony of Atlantic Puffins on the Maine coast. The island is designated as a bird sanctuary by the U.S. and Canadian Wildlife Service, and is also the site of a light station, maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard. Puffin-watching trips leave from Cutler Harbor from May through August.

Birding enthusiasts visiting the island may also see razorbills and arctic terns, and on the journey to and from the island, gannets, petrels, shearwaters, common murres, eiders and guillemots as well as eagles, and marine life such as porpoises, seals and whales.

ISLAND CRUISING

Coastal sightseeing trips and nature cruises bring the visitor close to the most spectacular, undiscovered and tranquil scenery along the Maine coast, which provides a magnificent alternative to the commercialized areas of southern and mid-coast Maine.
