Art Reception and Show at the Library
Month of May, Time: Library Hours
Location: Lubec Memorial Library, 55 Water St, Lubec.
Reception on May 9th, 12 - 2 PM.
Born and raised in Suffolk, England, art has interested Paul for most of his life, and he searched for a medium that would allow him to express himself. While he has worked various artistic mediums, such as oil paints, watercolors, sketching, and various others, it wasn't until he relocated to Cyprus that he found a way to express himself through art - using the ancient art of mosaic.
For thousands of years, mankind has adorned his home and public buildings with the intricate art of mosaic. Mosaic is an ancient art form, but each new generation is creating fresh designs, using modern materials and colors whilst being influenced by the beautiful work left by artists of the past.
Using the ancient art of mosaic, Paul creates a wide variety of artworks from pet portraits, landscapes, still life art, garden features, and recreating classic paintings using both ceramic and vitreous glass tiles. Each tile is hand cut and placed one by one to form the detail and composition. He has been creating mosaics for over 22 years and has created some 1,500 unique and individual pieces at last count. No two pieces are ever the same.
For the last 15 years he has traveled the world with his husband who was in the U.S. Foreign Service. Many of his pieces were inspired by the culture and customs of the countries they served in.
In 2020 his mosaic interpretation of Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring was selected to hang at the Residence of the U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands.
Now retired and living in Machias, ME, he is finding a lot of inspiration in the beauty of Down East. He's an active member of the Machias Arts Council and takes part in many of their events. He exhibits at local art shows and fairs each summer. Such as, the Wild Blueberry Festival, Margaretta Days, Bar Harbor Fine Arts Festival, and the First Friday Art Walk, to name a few. He has also taken part in several of the Machias Art Council's Art Shows and his first solo gallery exhibition took place at the Eastport Gallery in Eastport Maine in June 2024.
Paul's mosaics will be on display at the Lubec Memorial Library for the entire month of May.
