Online Writing Class with Marco Wilkinson. In times of ecological emergency, it can be hard as non-fiction writers not to dwell on the negative as a kind of reportage of apocalypse unfolding. In this generative writing workshop, we will explore different possibilities for finding futures to inhabit via our writing practices.

What does it mean to live a local life? When systems of infrastructure break down, what’s left? Who are we when we flood/burn/blow away/go thirsty/get sick, and who are we the day after?

A variety of readings will guide us through the process of writing our way into ways of living that might just carry us through, emerging out of emergency into some kind of future. We’ll discuss these readings, work with writing prompts, and share what we come up with each other.

Marco Wilkinson is an Assistant Professor in the Literature Department at UC San Diego. He is the author of Madder: A Memoir in Weeds (Coffee House Press, 2021), is a contributor to the anthology, Solastalgia: An Antholgoy of Emotion in a Disappearing World (University of Virginia Press, 2023), and has had essays appear in journals including Kenyon Review, Ecotone, DIAGRAM, and Seneca Review. He has been a recipient of fellowships from Breadloaf Environmental Writers Conference, the Oak Spring Garden Foundation, the Montalvo Foundation, Crosshatch Center for Arts and Ecology, and Craigardan. He lives in San Diego.
